Protective Coatings

Protective coating is arguably the most widely used type of corrosion prevention solution. They are used to give long term protection for corrosive environments, ranging from most commonly atmospheric corrosion to austere chemical reaction vessels. Normally, the coating itself renders little structural strength. However, it creates a barrier between corrodants and structural materials, by which the structural integrity is maintained.

For corrosion protection purpose, the coating must be selected based on essential properties, according to NACE “Corrosion Prevention by Protective Coatings“:

  • Water Resistance
    • Water Absorption;
    • Moisture Vapour Transfer Rate;
    • Electroendosmosis;
    • Resistance to Ionic Passage
  • Thermal Gradient Across Coating
  • Chemical Resistance
  • Adhesion
  • Cohesion
  • Undercutting
  • Abrasion Resistance
  • Ability to Expand and Contract
  • Weather Resistance
  • Resistance to Dirt Pickup
  • Resistance to Bacteria and Fungus
  • Age Resistance
  • Easy Application

For coating with specific applications, the additional properties are critical as well:

  • Soil Stress Resistance
  • Mechanical Damage Resistance
  • Friction Resistance
  • Specific Chemical Attacks
  • Cathodic Disbonding Resistance
  • Cathodic Shielding Compatibility
